Displaced Prima Workers Receive Intensive Manufacturing Training in Spanish

In collaboration with Reedley Community College, Fresno EDC’s Good Jobs Initiative funded specialized maintenance mechanic training to address the workforce impact of Prima Wawona’s bankruptcy and closure. Responding to the needs of these displaced Prima Wawona employees, all of whom were primarily Spanish-speaking, this eight-week course was funded by Fresno EDC’s Good Jobs Initiative to upskill and empower maintenance employees affected by the closure. 12 former Prima Wawona, all primarily Spanish-speaking, enrolled in the program.

Under the guidance of Dr. Michael Ornelas, participants gained fundamental knowledge and hands-on practice crucial for maintenance mechanic roles. Translation support was provided to the class and Dr. Ornelas to ensure the participants’ accessibility and understanding. On April 12, the 12 displaced Prima Wawona employees successfully graduated from the program.
